Verificările sînt în conformitate cu angajamentul Bulgariei şi României faţă de Austria de a spori controalele la frontierele lor terestre. Angajamentul a fost prevăzut într-o anexă la decizia Consiliului Uniunii Europene privind aderarea celor două țări la spaţiul Schengen.
Inspecţii fizice, scanare cu raze X şi control al documentelor, au fost aplicate atît asupra mărfurilor, cît şi a cabinelor camioanelor, maşinilor, camionetelor şi autocarelor. Verificările au identificat încălcări ale legislaţiei vamale şi accizelor.
Controale întărite vor continua de asemenea pe şoselele din Bulgaria în cooperare cu Ministerul de Interne şi alte autorităţi cu competenţe în materie.
