Potrivit publicației Politico, Breton urmează să prezinte pe 27 februarie Programul european de investiții în domeniul apărării (EDIP), un fond destinat să stimuleze achizițiile comune de arme și să pregătească UE de război.
„Cred că trebuie să avem un fond de apărare uriaș, care să ajute la accelerarea (înarmării – n.r.), probabil chiar în valoare de 100 de miliarde de euro”, a declarat Breton marți, la un eveniment găzduit de grupul liberal Renew Europe.

În cadrul aceluiași eveniment, Breton, descris de Politico drept „omul cu multe povești”, a relatat și o întîmplare la care a fost martor în urma cu patru ani.
„Ne întoarcem în 2020, în ianuarie. Stăm cu Ursula von der Leyen, cu mine, cu Phil Hogan (comisar european pentru comerț – n.r.) și cu președintele Statelor Unite ale Americii. Ne aflam la Davos. Iar Donald Trump i-a spus Ursulei: «Trebuie să înțelegeți că, dacă Europa este atacată, nu vom veni niciodată să vă ajutăm și să vă sprijinim și, apropo, NATO este mort și vom pleca, vom părăsi NATO».
Era președintele Statelor Unite ale Americii – s-ar putea să se întoarcă”, a rememorat Thierry Breton. Comisarul european a adăugat: „A fost un mare semnal de alarmă… Așa că acum, mai mult ca niciodată, știm că sîntem pe cont propriu, desigur”.
