Peletele de culoare albă şi de mărimea unor boabe de linte sînt întrebuinţate în fabricarea componentelor plastice ale diferitelor bunuri.
Fragmentele de plastic au ajuns în apa mării după ce mai multe containere, în care se aflau circa 25 de tone de pelete, au căzut de pe o navă de marfă în timpul unei furtuni în luna decembrie.
Peletele erau ambalate în saci din plastic care s-au rupt după ce au ajuns în apa mării.

Compania daneză de transport maritim Maersk a confirmat că nava Toconao a pierdut şase containere în largul coastei Galiciei pe 8 decembrie în timp ce se deplasa spre Rotterdam.
Incidentul a fost raportat imediat Pazei de coastă spaniole şi portugheze, a precizat un purtător de cuvînt al grupului Maersk.
Proprietarii navei au angajat companii specializate pentru a ajuta la îndepărtarea peletelor. Numeroşi voluntari muncesc de mai multe zile pentru a curăţa plajele folosind mături, greble, lopeţi şi site.
Ecologiştii au avertizat în legătură cu pericolul reprezentat de plastic, care poate ajunge în lanţul alimentar uman şi animal.
